Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson - together they are One Direction. It’s hard to believe that just four years ago these five boys hadn’t even met each other. But with the help of the biggest television show in the UK, The X Factor, their millions of loyal fans and some killer songs, One Direction have become a global phenomenon. And this is their incredible story…

The making of One Direction

In July 2010. Five young boys from various parts of the UK and Ireland had entered the competition with nothing else but a passion for singing and raw talent. Their names were Niall, Zayn , Liam, Harry  and Louis and they had all entered as solo artists. Arriving to their individual auditions, they were given the task of impressing the judges. And they did. But just not quite how they imagined.

in February 2012, Niall, Zayn, Liam, Harry and Louis went out to America to promote their debut single. They began a gruelling tour of the States,. And their hard work paid off –‘What Makes You Beautiful’ debuted at No.28 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the highest entry for a British group’s debut single since the Spice Girls ‘Wannabe’ in 1997.

THE BEST MOMENT OF THE GUYS

Fans would line the streets outside studios, hotels and malls, hoping to meet their idols. In March 2012, the news came that Up All Night had entered the US Billboard 200 chart at number one – making music history as the first UK group to debut at No.1 with the debut album. The boys had done it, they’d officially cracked America!

 April saw One Direction pick up two Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice awards in LA, where they performed on stage alongside the likes of Katy Perry and Justin Bieber and in front of the First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama. Their success was unprecedented and they now even had a celebrity following with the likes of Joe Jonas, Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift speaking out about how much they adored these five boys from over the pond.

The first Number One

One Direction’s debut single, What Makes You Beautiful (Rami Yacoub, Carl Falk, Savan Kotecha), was released on 11 September 2011 in the UK – but remarkably, it was breaking records before it even went on sale. It became the biggest pre-order in Sony’s single history and went in at number one in the UK and Irish charts as soon as it was on iTunes. The boys cemented their success by selling a staggering 153,000 in their first week of release, with the fun California-shot video providing the perfect backdrop to one of the summer’s biggest tracks. 

February 2012 saw the boys win their first BRIT Award for Best Single at the famous award ceremony in London. And with their successes growing, it was time to take the 1D family abroad.

Niall James Horan was born in Mullingar, County Westmeath in the Republic of Ireland. His father is Bobby Horan and his mother is Maura Gallagher. Niall has an older brother named Greg, and their parents divorced in 1998 when Niall was just 5 years old.

Niall lived at both parents homes before he decided to stay long-term with his dad, and he felt that living in Mullingar was the easiest thing to do back then because all of his friends were there.

Niall is the second youngest member of One Direction and auditioned for The X Factor in Dublin when he was 16 years old. His audition song was ‘So Sick?’ by Ne-Yo and three out of four judges gave him a ‘yes’ after his performance.

Zayn Javadd Malik was born in West Lane, Baildon, Bradford, England to father Yaser Malik and English mother Patricia. He has one older sister, Doniya, and two younger sisters, Waliyha and Safaa.

Zayn grew up in East Bowling, located south of the Bradford city centre, and he was a student at Lower Fields Primary School in East Bowling. He later went to Tong High School, a state comprehensive school.

 

He’s the second oldest member of One Direction and auditioned for The X Factor in Manchester when he was 17 years old. Zayn’s audition song was ‘Let Me Love You’ by Mario and all three judges gave him a ‘yes’ after his performance.

Louis was a sixth form student at Hall Cross School, and previously was a pupil at The Hayfield School. Whilst at school he starred in several musical theatre productions.

was born in Wolverhampton, England to Geoff and Karen payne. He’s got two older sisters called Nicola and Ruth. He was born 3 weeks early and as a result had a few health issues. The first four years of his life were spent in and out of hospitals, getting regular tests done.

Doctors noticed that one of Liam’s kidneys was scarred and not functioning properly, however in 2012 Liam found out that his kidney had actually started functioning properly again!

Liam is the third oldest member of One Direction and first auditioned for The X Factor in 2008 at just 14 years old. He impressed judges made it all the way to boot camp but Simon thought he was too young at the time and asked him to re-audition in a few years time.

Two years later, Liam re-auditioned in Birmingham when he was 16 years old. His audition song was ‘Cry Me a River’ by Justin Timberlake and the audience gave him a standing ovation after his performance. At boot camp, Liam sang ‘Stop Crying Your Heart Out’ by Oasis but didn’t make it through as a solo artist. He was then however chosen by the judges to become part of One Direction.
